The Starboard “Tiki Race Series” came to Punta de Mita on Sunday August 24, after a collaboration with our friends Tribal SUP, Roberto Conti Vecchi and Diego Martinez, who were eager to bring the “One design” format to their local beach and friends.
The Tiki Race Series has begun traveling around Mexico … with a twist on the standard Standup Paddle races…. all participants use the exact same board… the ASTRO X 12’6 tOURING 30” which is a very stable, fast board that is fun for the whole family.
This format invites all skills levels ands age groups, it is friendly and fun for newcomers who want to try the sport and experts alike. Professionals also have the opportunity to compete head to head where the one design format will allow the fastest paddler of the day to win, not necessarily the fastest board!
At 9.30 am the registration desk was open – local children, adults, friends, tourists and locals in Punta de Mita prepared for the various races classes – Beginners Race, Tandem Race, Relay Race and Race Elite.
The children were on for round one and were ready to jump into the water. The conditions were perfect for the little ones paddled the ASTRO TOURING 12′ 6 X 30” to a buoy about 30 meters off the beach, made a turn and headed back to the starting point completing a lap of 60 meters.
The Tiki Race series always plus the hidden talent out from the beaches, and Punta de Mita would not be the exception. The race division 17 and under was dominated by local kids from Punta de Mita.
The smiles and happiness before, during and after the races was a constant element among participants who attended the invitation and Tribal Surf SUP Mexico with Starboard.
The race “Tandem” represented a good opportunity for local Punta de Mita, José Alonso Andrade “Nano” and selected professional and former Mexican Felipe Rodriguez Lorenzo Sayulita to show his good technique and team work.

As we expected all the Elite races were the most exciting Tiki Starboard Race Series, and was divided into the following categories: Pro for men, ladies and beginners which carry the ASTRO TOURING 12’6 X 30” a tour for 4 four buoys located between the beach groynes El Anclote.
Spectators on the beach, friends, family, and diners restaurants organizers enjoyed seeing participants give their best to complete this circuit where each of these races had closed the line in arrivals beach.
